This past weekend we traveled to Prairie City, CA for the third round of regional Ultra4 USA races. The Wolff racing team traveled over 3,000 miles to compete in the UTV Open, Pro modified and 4400 unlimited classes. Friday kicked off qualifying and Paul would set the Pole (1st) position in the UTV pro mod, 2nd in the UTV Open and another Pole position in the 4400 unlimited class.
Saturday kicked off the first round of racing with the prelims to determine starting order for the main event later that evening. Paul would Win his prelim race in all three classes he competed in. setting the fastest lap times of the day in all three. Moving on into the mains starting with the UTV open class. Paul left the line in first position and held the lead the entire race to bring home the win after 10 laps. After a class in-between Paul would climb back into the same Canam and race the pro modified class. Leaving the line first again Paul would hold the lead nearly the entire race until the final three laps where a belt issue would claim his lead and put him into 3rd place in class.
The final race of the weekend was the 4400 unlimited race where Paul would start the race on the pole. After leading the first 5 laps Paul was overtaken for the lead by multi time champion loren Healy. But the fight would be on for the remaining 5 laps. Battling back in forth with nail biting racing action for the final 5 laps. The crowd was on their feet the entire race as Paul and loren battled for the lead and put on one of the best shows an ultra4 crowd has ever seen. With a 13 second lead over third place Paul would make one final push to pass for the lead in the final few turns of the race. After blitzing thru the final rock section of the course Paul lost a serptine belt in the final turn of the race that would shut his car down and cause a loss of power steering. At this point all Paul could do was idle his way to the finish line which was nearly 200 feet away. where the third place driver was able to make a pass at the last second to bump Paul down into third overall in the 4400 race.
This weekend Paul showed out and put on a phenomenal performance for fans and other racers that spectated throughout the weekend. It was an unfortunate end to the final race of the weekend. However Paul held his head up high as we walked away from yet another weekend of exciting Ultra4 racing.
